What an inspiring story. Very well done to become drug free. You are right by saying that parents should watch their children more closely to prevent drug abuse. There are ALWAYS signs of an addiction. It is always better to do something as doing nothing.

Thank you Melinda for sharing your story with this New Zealander. I found it truly inspirational and affects all of us no matter where we are from.
I am studying Social Policy which I hope will lead me to become a Counsellor. Your inspiring story will help with my assignment.
Again thank you.

Melinda, congratulations on your recovery. I too was sexually abused as a child and turned to drugs by the time I was 14. I began using opium and later turned to heroin. I believe that if I had not been abused the way I was and then my mother telling me I was a whore, slut, hussy and other words a ten year old can't understand I wouldn't have felt so uch guilt and hate for myself. Gettingt my shot of heroin was like being a baby cuddled in y mother's arms. I felt so much warmth and love. That is such a horrible way to feel - to interpret heroin addiction to a mother's love. I have been on methadone now for many years and clean from both heroin and cocaine. I am going to college and studying psychology adn substance abuse. I hope to one day be a drug counselor working with sexually abused women. Maybe someday I will finally be free of methadone too. Good luck to you. You story is fantastic. Marita

This is a truly inspiring story. I have heard it said that those who can directly empathize with their clients are the successful psychologists. I believe this to be completely true!

What an amazing story. I am a recovering drug addict as well and I just think that our society needs to wake up and realize that these are real people with real problems. A 12 step program is only the FIRST step and a 28 day detox is simply the hammer and nails in the tool box that is needed to recover from drug addiction. Thank you Melinda.

What a weighty issue. Congratulations on your new life, Melinda. I hardly know how to say more, but I'm feeling it. I'm sure our culture needs a hundred such foundations.
